Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most difficult but favored poker games. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible game, has expanded in popularity so quickly.
Omaha/8 starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A round of betting ensues in which players can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. One more sequence of wagering ensues. After all the players have either called or dropped out, an additional card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of wagering happens at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants will need to make the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where many entrants can get baffled. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must use exactly three cards on the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the best possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same approach in nearly every poker game.
A lower hand is more complicated, but really opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that can be put together, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the higher hand takes the whole pot.
It may seem complicated initially, after a couple of hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the basic nuances of play with ease. Since you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha 8 or better provides an amazing array of betting choices and owing to the fact that you have several players shooting for the high hand, along with several shooting for the low hand. If you prefer a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to play Omaha/8.
