Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most difficult but popular poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible game, has increased in acceptance so amazingly.

Omaha/8 starts just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of betting follows in which gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is called the flop. Another round of wagering happens. Once all the players have in turn called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of wagering ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The players will need to make the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is where many entrants can get confused. Contrasted to Holdem, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player has to utilize precisely three cards from the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. No more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the best hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same approach in nearly all poker games.

A low hand is more complicated, but really opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that could be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the high hand wins the complete pot.

While it seems difficult at first, after a couple of rounds you will be able to get the base subtleties of the game with ease. Seeing as you have players wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha Hi-Lo provides an amazing collection of betting choices and seeing that you have numerous individuals trying for the high, along with several trying for the low.
